Configure InDesign before exporting the IDML

Install our new InDesign extension and skip this configuration: The InDesign extension.

If you do not plan on using the Web Editor, then skip this guide. The page previews of Adobe® InDesign® documents (shown in the Web Editor) are created by Adobe InDesign itself, depending on a preference setting in Adobe InDesign. The default behaviour is not to include page thumbnails, so in order to see them inside Redokun's Web Editor, a one-time configuration is needed.

Also, after having configured Adobe InDesign, every old file needs to be saved again in INDD format before exporting the IDML version of the file. This is due to an Adobe InDesign behaviour which generates the page thumbnails only when saving in INDD format. As a rule of thumb, just remember to save the file in INDD format before exporting the IDML file.

See how to configure InDesign before exporting the IDML in this video or follow the instructions below.

Step-by-step guide

  • Open Adobe® InDesign® , choose InDesign > Preferences > File Handling (OS X) or Edit > Preferences > File Handling (Windows).InDesign > Preferences > File Handling
  • In the Preferences dialog:
    1. check the “Always Save Preview Images with Documents” option.
    2. set “Pages” to “All Pages
    3. set “Preview Size” to “Extra Large 1024x1024”

    Preference dialog

This preference setting will affect all Adobe® InDesign® documents that you'll save in the future. There is no way to have page previews for old documents that haven’t been saved in the INDD format with these new preference settings.

After having configured InDesign, restart the program.

Note that after configuring Adobe® InDesign® , for previous saved documents, you need to save the document in INDD format and then export the same file in IDML format.

Why is this necessary?

Redokun relies on InDesign to generate the previews when saving the file. It is the quickest way and most reliable way of producing the page thumbnails. Using this method, you don't need to upload the document assets (images, fonts, etc) and let us generate the page previews. Instead, InDesign does that automatically when properly configured.
